When you ask tech savvy users which programs they use to remove temporary files on their Windows system, it is likely that the list they provide you with includes CCleaner. It is one of those small lightweight programs that does not get in your way but is powerful enough to make an impact.
Clearing temporary files has two main purposes. First, it frees up disk space on the hard drive which is great, especially if you are using one of those blazing fast Solid State Drives that come with little space, and second, it is great for privacy purposes as temporary files may reveal information about files and how you use the system that you may not want to share with anyone.
Piriform, the company behind the application, released CCleaner 4.0 just a couple of minutes ago. The new version comes with many under the hood changes, a new tool and several components that have been optimized in it.

The program interface itself has not changed, displaying links to the temporary file cleaner, Registry scanner and the tools section on the left. The tools section features the new duplicate file finder tool that you can run to find dupes on your system. You can configure the file finder here by selecting the matching patterns - name, size and modified date - as well as files that you want ignored and the drives you want to include and folders that you want to exclude from the scan.

A click on add displays a second menu that you can use to add a folder or drive to the include or exclude selection.  Results are then displayed in groups and it is up to you to select individual files that you want to delete. You can furthermore save the results to a text file.
Several tools have been improved in this new version. This includes Drive Wiper which received a performance boost, the startup manager and its optimized item detection algorithm, and the Registry Cleaner which has been optimized and improved. Windows users who run 64-bit versions of the operating system will benefit from optimized builds for their systems, and everyone benefits from performance improvements across the board.
A couple of new programs have been added to the cleaning module as well, including Samsung Kies, Real Player 16, Avast Antivirus 8 and Adobe Photoshop 6.
CCleaner Professional users get access to the System and Browser Monitoring tool on top of it. No information have been published yet about that tool, but from the sound of it, it seems as if it monitors settings of web browsers and the systems to warn users if they change.
