In the next five years, Land Rover will change its global naming practice so that each model has just one name worldwide, and none of the names used will be LR2 or LR4. Rather, those SUVs—or their successors—will be rebranded with the names they use elsewhere, which at present are Freelander and Discovery, respectively. Those names don’t have the best connotation in the U.S., with the former being a relative unknown even when it was sold here and the latter being a charismatic but chronically unreliable safari adventure vehicle. But we feel—and Land Rover seems to agree—that Freelander and Discovery would be preferable to the anonymous badges the LR2 and LR4 wear now.
