The annual Defcon hacker conference is all about using software and hardware smarts to make a statement. In the case of one attendee who goes by the handle Loather, it was about making a fashion statement.
Using $250 worth of off-the-shelf parts and some custom-written code, he designed a hat adorned with a rainbow of flashing colors. A microphone on the front allowed them to blink in time to nearby music or voices, or he could change the settings to cause them to turn on and off in seemingly random sequences. As he strolled through the crowded halls of the 13,000-attendee event, his creation turned many a head and fetched plenty of approving comments.
"I wanted to do something to get noticed," Loather, who the rest of the year is a San Diego-based IT professional, told Ars. "I thought it might help me get into the parties."
