Recordlective: Impressive online music listening service:
When it comes to listening to music on the Internet, you have more options at your disposal than you can try out in a life time. From streaming music services like Spotify over Internet radio to searching for and playing music on video hosting sites such as YouTube.
Recordlective is a new beta service that is a mashup of several popular services. What the service does is link full music discographies to YouTube videos. While it is not the first service to do so, it is one that works considerable well and without registration or other nuisances.
All you need to do is visit the homepage of the service, enter a band or artist name into the search form there to get a list of all albums and singles displayed. This works really well for many artists, I tried well known artists like Dire Straits and Michael Jackson, but also lesser known ones such as Bridge to Solace or Cryptic Wintermoon. The information are pulled from Last.fm which explains the excellent results when you search for artists. The form displays suggestions once you start typing which you can accept directly to be taken to an artist’s page.
Here you see a – very – basic list of albums, EPs, singles, compilations and other works by the selected band, or, if there are multiple hits, a selection of artists that match the search query.
A click on a result opens the player interface. Here you can play all songs of the selected album directly on page, switch between songs, read the band biography that is taken from Last.fm, Wikipedia and maybe other resources, and watch the videos that the service pulled from YouTube at the same time.
The service seems to pick music videos automatically which works really well. Sometimes though you may end up with the wrong video. A click on the zap button in the interface pulls another video from YouTube and chance is high that it is the correct song this time. You can repeat the zapping until the correct video and song is played.
Registered users can add albums to their collection with a click on the collect button. One added benefit of this procedure is that Recordlective will remember the songs that you have selected using the zap feature so that they are from then on picked automatically. The service is easy to use and impressive in terms of supported artists and songs. I suggest you give it a try.
