Regular readers of this blog know that KeePass is my go to software for all things that have to do with passwords. It is a desktop application that leaves little to be desired when it comes to secure password management. From secure storage over browser plugins to note taking, it is all there integrated into that tiny little app.
My behavior has changed quite a bit since I switched from the online password manager Last Pass to KeePass, as I find myself logging into less websites than before. The core reason for this is that I do not use the web browser plugins that KeePass users can use to integrate the password manager into a web browser.
A new version of KeePass has just been released by its author. Existing KeePass users who start the application on their system should get an update notification that includes a link to the program’s homepage but not direct option to download the update from the update prompt.
The author of the program has added a new security feature to KeePass 2.20 that prevents silent data corruption attacks by authenticating header data in the password database files. The new version of the password manager imports DesktopKnox 3.2 xml files, supports the exporting of KeePass 1.x csv files, and the moving of the PLGX cache to another drive.
KeePass 2.20 users furthermore benefit from a set of features and improvements that make the program more comfortable to work with. This includes the remembering of working directories for each dialog context, better automatic generic csv file import, and support for adding files via drag and drop to a KeePass entry. The latter is a useful feature if you want to add document scans, bank or credit card statements, recipes, certificates and other important documents and files to the password manager to protect them from being accessed on the system by unauthorized users.
