Last week we launched the Atari Arcade – a modern take on the Atari classics like Asteroids, Missile Command and Centipede. Since then, we’ve had a lot of fun celebrating with developers and meeting new gaming enthusiasts. And we’re not done – we have a few cool ways you can still get in on the Atari fun and win some really cool hardware in the process.
Old School Meets New School with Atari 2600 Gaming Machines
At the core of the web experiences we’ve created over the past year (including TheFind, Pulse and now Atari) is engaging the developer community on how powerful HTML5 can be, and giving back to the community with things like code on GitHub and Behind the Scenes content on our projects. With Atari we wanted to take this a step further with the gaming culture at PAX and PAX:DEV and started by throwing a party for up-and-coming gaming developers. One thing that’s awesome with the Arcade is that Atari is offering up the SDK for developers to build their own games – so we wanted to make sure this community got a chance to see the platform in action.
We had a great time meeting you all, listening to the DJ (spinning on his own touch-friendly Windows 8 app) and hanging out with both Nolan Bushnell (founder of Atari) and Grant Skinner (HTML5 game designers of Atari Arcade). Prior to the event we worked with Hard Drives Northwest to retrofit old Atari 2600 consoles with new, state of the art gaming PC power (all the details will soon be on the Extreme Windows Blog!), and we used our time with Nolan to get these signed. You could win one of two of these (which feature a quad-core processor, graphics card, HDMI, and USB ports) – Freddie Wong (the YouTube star behind the “Old School vs. New School” video) is giving them away (while also showing the behind the scenes of the big old versus new battle) so be sure to check out his YouTube channel.
PAX = T-shirts!
We followed up our time with the gaming developers by heading to PAX to meet with the gaming enthusiasts themselves, and it was a lot of fun meeting you all and showing you the updated Atari Arcade. One of our favorite parts was giving away hundreds of Atari Arcade t-shirts. We managed to store a couple away to give away to you all – be sure to check out @IE for updates on how you can win one.
