I like to use YouTube to discover new music, and use several methods for that. I may load a song that I know and like already, and look at the related videos that YouTube lists in the sidebar. This works well sometimes, but not always. Another option is to look through playlists directly, or to simply search for artists, bands or genres that I’m interested in. The filtering options at the top, for instance by date, rating or view count help me improve the results further.
If the downloading of music from YouTube is legal in your country, you may do so on a regular basis. Since there is no default option to download videos or the audio directly, it is necessary to install third party add-ons or extensions to do just that. And while we have reviewed quite the variety of extensions for those tasks, not a lot came close to the YouTube MP3 Podcaster extension for the Firefox web browser.
Unlike other extensions of its kind, YouTube MP3 Podcaster makes the downloads available directly, and without redirections to third party websites where the video is converted into an appropriate audio format. Once you have installed the extension in Firefox and restarted the browser, you will see download and quality options underneath each video on the YouTube website.
Here you can select the format that you want to save the audio in, with flv, mp4, 3gp, mp3 and hd available. A slider beneath lets you select the quality level of the video, from 32 kbps to 224 kbps.
A click on a format opens the save window that lets you select a folder on your hard drive where you want the audio track to be saved into.
The quality slider opens up interesting options. It is for instance possible to select a lower quality for spoken text, and a higher quality for music. The benefit of selecting a lower audio quality for text is that it has a direct impact on the size of the audio file that you save to your computer.
The scissor lets you clip the audio automatically. The audio will be saved from the current position on when you click on the scissor before you select one of the save options.
Closing Words
The ability to download YouTube music as audio directly without noticeable delays is great in itself. The quality slider and option to cut audio automatically make this a great extension for Firefox users who want to download music from YouTube.
