In Windows 8 Explorer is going to get a new ribbon User Interface which exposes a useful command buried in Windows 7/Vista (Love the ribbon!).
Often you have a file visible in Explorer but need to add it somewhere which doesn’t support drag & drop. This is common in application import/attach dialogs, web-upload selectors or even the good old fashioned command prompt. In Windows 7/Vista you can easily click on the breadcrumb to reveal the folder path, but not the file itself.
Windows 8 Copy Path
Windows 8 Consumer Preview has a “Copy Path” button on the Home Tab. It captures the full folder path & file name to the clipboard. Just paste this into any file dialog and the selected file is loaded with no need to browse, browse, browse back to the folder & file. A simple copy/paste potentially saves lots of clicks.
The same trick in Windows 7 & Vista
If you select the file in Explorer, hold the keyboard Shift key while you right click the menu options will include “Copy as path”. Like that new Windows 8 button it copies the full folder & file path to the clipboard ready to paste anywhere. For some, daft, reason the normal Explorer right click menu (without holding shift) omits this!
