Around the holidays, food banks are overflowing with donations. Generosity peaks, and the needy eat well for that part of the year. But what about the rest of the year?
According to Turtle Wings, an electronics recycling company, Earth Day is like the holidays. We’re reminded to recycle and care about the environment, but as the occasion passes and awareness decreases, some might fall back into old, wasteful habits.

An influx of used devices make their way to Turtle Wings’ Maryland-based warehouse during Earth Week. Much like Black Friday, the company weathers the storm by hiring new employees for the surge in electronic recyclables, ordering more supplies and making sure the process runs smoothly.
“On the one hand, we are always happy to see individuals, corporations and government entities dispose of used electronics in a responsible manner with a certified recycler,” says Elizabeth Wilmot, founder and president of Turtle Wings, in a release. “On the other hand, it also brings up an interesting question: What is really happening to e-waste during all the other seasons? Why does it take the reminder of a national holiday to get companies and government offices to pick up the phone and deal with their e-waste responsibly?”
“Ideally, our company would see equal amounts of service requests throughout the year,” Wilmot says.
