It’s not here yet, but it will be soon: Jaguar has formally announced a new sports car called the F-type. Derived from the C-X16 concept car shown at the Frankfurt auto show last fall, the car will debut as a convertible and go on sale in the middle of 2013.
The compact sports car will compete with the Porsche Cayman and 911; we expect it to be powered by a supercharged V-6 that makes around 350 hp. A hybrid is possible later.
Jaguar has worked tirelessly on proposals to bring an F-type to market. The name is intended to evoke memories of the legendary E-type. When that car was launched in 1961 with a straight-six engine, it stood for beauty—and affordable performance. Throughout the years, its character mellowed and it became a soft 12-cylinder poseur, whose fitting replacement was the XJ-S. The new F-type is designed to emphasize youthfulness and performance—just as the E-type did so many years ago. Jaguar speaks of a “heightened level of dynamic driving reward.” We’re all for it.
