Mercedes-Benz boasts that its second-generation GL, which will be unveiled to the public at this week’s New York auto show, is “all-new.” Indeed, we have no reason to doubt any claims that this truck has little mechanically in common with its predecessor, the first GL. But with this truck looking rather like a longer version of its ML platform mate, “all-new” may be a case of quite literally stretching the truth. This wouldn’t be much of a big deal—the last M- and GL-classes also shared quite a bit underneath, after all, and we liked the previous GL just dandy. But the latest ML is a bit of a downer in the drive department, which has us a bit worried about this next version of one of our favorite luxury SUVs.
