iPhone 4, 4S prices drop a month ahead of expected new model launch

iPhone 4, 4S prices drop a month ahead of expected new model launch:
Continuing last week's news that Sprint is dropping $50 off the price of an iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and 4S devices can now be purchased at (up to) a $50 discount for use on Verizon or AT&T.
As noted by AllThingsD, Target is offering a $20 discount off the iPhone 4S when purchasing for activation on AT&T or Verizon. Best Buy is also offering the older iPhone 4 for $49.99, another $50 discount.
The discounts come just one month away from the expected introduction of a new iPhone model on September 12 (or thereabouts). In addition to clearing inventory for Target, Best Buy, and other retailers, the discounts should also help keep iPhone sales figures for Apple's fiscal fourth quarter from plummeting further, as is typical before a new model introduction. Because of the staggered roll-out of the iPhone 4 throughout 2011, and the "late" October 2011 introduction of the iPhone 4S, iPhone sales peaked much faster in 2012 than in 2011. A return to the typical pattern could result in the first year-over-year decline in iPhone sales unless Apple is able to ship significant quantities of a new device before the close of its fiscal quarter in late September.
