A minor but important problem with the sensors in the self-diagnostic software used by the Safety Restraint System (SRS) system in some Mitsubishi i-MiEV models in Canada has led to a recall notice from Transport Canada.



The recall only affects 49 vehicles and is important because it can cause the airbags to not work. Specifically, since the sensors are incompatible, the SRS warning light can turn on. If, then, the "vehicle were [to] continue being operated with the warning lamp illuminated, the inflatable curtain and side impact airbags may not deploy or the front airbags may deploy late. This could result in an increased risk of injury to an occupant during a crash."



Transport Canada says dealers will replace the sensors with updated versions. We've asked Mitsubishi if this same problem might lead to a recall in the U.S. but have not yet heard back. When we do, we will let you know.
