It’s already the third week of the Around the World with Lightroom Photo Contest, and we’re excited to have received over 1,400 photos taken in more than 80 countries! We’ve been really impressed by the quality and diversity of all your submissions so far, and we’re excited to see what other places your travels have taken you recently. Over the last few weeks we’ve showcased travel photography from our own Lightroom team to provide inspiration for your submissions. Last Thursday, you heard from team members Kelly Castro and Benjamin Warde about their recent trips to Europe and some great shots from a 15th century boat, respectively. This week, Principal Scientist Eric Chan shares images and stories from his recent trips to the Olympic National Park and Yosemite National Park.

When you travel, what is your favorite subject to capture?
Eric: Mostly landscape and nature photography with a soft spot for closeups. If I had to choose something more specific it would be trees or water reflections. When I travel I’m also always looking for places to eat, so naturally I end up taking a lot of food pictures.
What is your most important piece of photography equipment?
Eric: That tends to depend on the trip; if I’m going to a place like Toronto, doing food photography, I need to bring a camera that can handle close-ups. Since I also take a lot of close-up nature shots, a close-up lens is probably one of the most important pieces of equipment that I use.
Where have you traveled to most recently? Any memorable shots?
Eric: Recently I visited Olympic National Park in Washington State. It was my fourth or fifth time there and actually turned out to have near blizzard conditions most of the time I was there. It’s really cool to go back to a place that you’re so familiar with and find it completely changed. I also went to Yosemite recently. Since it’s such a frequently photographed place, I tried taking different photos than I would normally take. Usually for those kind of landscapes I bring a tripod but this time I did a lot more freehand shots…tried to go faster and rely more on intuition.
If you could go anywhere in the world for purely photographic purposes where would that be and why?
Eric: Antarctica. I’ve heard it described as the closest place on earth to being on another planet. A second choice would probably be Zion National Park. It looks like the sort of color palette I usually go for…you get this great mix of red rock and canyons that give you great reflected light.
