Unemployment Extension 2012

Unemployment Extension 2012:
Federal extended unemployment benefits are in effect through 2012 with different levels of benefits available based on your unemployment status and the state from which you are collecting benefits.  There will be no extended benefits for 2013 unless new legislation is passed by Congress prior to the end of the year.

The number of weeks of extended unemployment benefits is gradually being reduced to 73 weeks in states with high unemployment and 63 weeks in the other states, then eliminated entirely for next year.

As the changes are implemented, weeks will be cut from some of the tiers and there are new requirements for tiers to be available based on state unemployment rates.

Unemployed workers who started collecting unemployment in July 2012 will not be entitled to receive the additional weeks of benefits that the federal government traditionally has provided because the legislation that provides them will expire at the end of December.

Here's more information on the changes:

Important: Check your State Unemployment Office website for details on who qualifies for extended benefits and when and how benefits will be paid.  Check the "Extended Benefits" section for information.
