Nokia just introduced here. No, really, here is the name. It is the new brand for its location and mapping service. It feels like ‘Ovi Maps’ all over again. Remember Ovi? I don’t understand why the rebranding was necessary, but some good news came along with it. Nokia is launching a maps application for iOS under here.
Here Maps will be based on HTML5 and include offline capabilities, voice-guided walk navigation, and public transport directions. The application is scheduled to be available for free download from Apple’s App Store in the coming weeks.
Also mentioned in today’s press announcement was the acquisition of Earthmine. The company’s reality capture and processing technologies will become important to the 3D map making capabilities of here.
