Microsoft: We’re Eliminating Backup Generators – The growing focus on using clean energy to power large data centers is prompting some of the industry’s largest players to ditch their generators, along with their diesel fuel emissions. Microsoft is the latest company to announce its intention to reduce its use of diesel generators. The move is part of a broader initiative to make Microsoft’s server farms more sustainable and less reliant on the utility grid.
Goldman Sachs Goes Modular With IO – Investment banking giant Goldman Sachs will begin using factory-built modular data centers to deploy its IT infrastructure, and has partnered with IO to deploy modules across three continents, the companies said today.The shift by Goldman Sachs represents a major vote of confidence in factory-built data center capacity.
The Internet of Things: A Boom for Hosting – The “Internet of Things” will transform the hosting and data center industries, generating a tidal wave of data that will prompt companies to enlist third-party providers to help them manage it, according to analyst Rachel Chalmers of 451 Research,who highlighted the resilience of the data center industry, as well as an immense opportunity opening in front of it.
BMW To Deploy HPC Clusters at Verne Global In Iceland – Automaker BMW will be taking data center space in Iceland at Verne Global, where it will use modular data centers from Colt to support a group of high performance computing clusters that will be used to run simulations when designing new cars.
OpenStack Foundation Launches With $10 Million in Funding - The OpenStack Foundation officially launched today, just two short years after the first release of the open source cloud OS OpenStack. Through member dues and corporate sponsorships, OpenStack has secured more than $10 million in funding commitments as of September, and has begun hiring staff.
