BMW Unveils C Evolution Electric Scooter Concept [2012 Paris Auto Show]

BMW Unveils C Evolution Electric Scooter Concept [2012 Paris Auto Show]:
BMW C Evolution
Given the comparatively higher cost of fuel, near-constant traffic congestion, and limited parking opportunities, it comes as no surprise that scooters hold a much higher place in the personal-mobility food chain in Europe than in the U.S. And as the four-wheeled world explores the boundaries of low-emission propulsion, so does the two-wheeled domain: Witness the BMW C Evolution concept. The C Evolution is the third development stage in its electric scooter program. BMW says what will be on display in Paris is a “near-production prototype” of an electric scooter as it may appear in mass-market form. From the start, the Bavarians designed the e-scooter to address increasingly stringent urban emission standards without the range limitations of traditional EVs.
Powered by an electric motor producing 47 hp, the scooter can reach an electronically limited 75 mph, so highway travel is possible. BMW hasn’t quoted any performance estimates yet, simply stating, “it comfortably holds its own” against today’s 600-cc scooters. According to the brand, the C Evolution uses the same lithium-ion batteries as the i3. Arguably the most unique aspect of the battery setup is that it functions as a load-bearing element: Its die-cast aluminum case forms the center section of the frame, much like the engine in a Formula 1 racer. As for range, BMW is quoting 60 miles.

Charging is claimed to take three hours with “ideal” conditions. The C Evolution makes use of a car-standard charging port, meaning it’s compatible with any charging station within the country of sale—ports and sockets aren’t necessarily standardized worldwide. BMW says this is a first in the world of two-wheelers. Coasting and braking recharges the scooter’s battery; BMW has highlighted the familiar feeling of drag associated with such tasks in many hybrids and EVs as the feeling of “engine braking,” which will be familiar to two-wheel aficionados.
The idea of silently gliding through town on a Sunday morning in pursuit of fresh baked goods and coffee kind of makes us feels all warm and fuzzy.  Here’s hoping the C Evolution becomes a reality soon.
