Apple: Five million iPhone 5 sales, 100 million iOS 6 upgrades

Apple: Five million iPhone 5 sales, 100 million iOS 6 upgrades:

Apple on Monday announced that iPhone 5 sales topped more than five million over its first weekend, and that more than 100 million iOS devices are now running iOS 6.

Only nine countries contributed to Apple’s selling five million iPhone 5s over its first three days of availability: the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, and the U.K; Apple says the phone will go on sale in 22 more countries at the end of this week week, and more than 100 by the end of the year.

Last October, Apple announced four million opening weekend sales for the iPhone 4S, and 25 million iOS 5 upgrades. When the third-generation iPad went on sale earlier this year, Apple sold three million units during its opening weekend. The iPhone 4 tallied 1.7 million sales in its first weekend of availability in 2010.

Based on those numbers, it appears that the iPhone 5 is Apple’s fastest selling iOS device to date.

Apple still says that some of the two million customers who pre-ordered the iPhone 5 won’t receive their phones until October, since the company sold through its initial preorder stock already.
