Samsung's latest, biggest, most stylus-using phone, the Galaxy Note II, was officially unveiled today during the company's press conference at IFA 2012 in Germany. However, the version announced today is for international audiences only, with a tweaked US version to come later in the year—a similar difference exists between the US and international versions of the company's flagship Galaxy SIII smartphone, which use different SoCs.
The phone, which will launch with Jelly Bean, includes a 5.5" 1280x720 Super AMOLED screen (giving it a 16:9 aspect ratio but slightly fewer pixels than the first Galaxy Note), a 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos 4 processor, 2GB of RAM, HSPA+ and LTE connectivity, dual-band 802.11n, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, an eight megapixel rear-facing camera, and a 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera. Samsung has shrunk the bezel of the smartphone to keep the slightly larger screen from making the phone itself larger than the pervious Galaxy Note. 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB versions of the phone are planned, and a microSD card slot is also provided for additional expansion.
The phone features a tweaked version of the included S Pen stylus, which is slightly longer and thicker than the old version and has a rubber tip to more accurately simulate writing on actual paper. There are also some software enhancements—for example, if you hover the S Pen over an e-mail or appointment, the phone will show you a preview of that item's contents. New applications also allow you to take quick notes more easily and write notes on the "back" of digital photos.
