Retina MacBook Pro SSD modules to ship next week from OWC

Retina MacBook Pro SSD modules to ship next week from OWC:

OWC's Aura Pro 480GB SSD module for the Retina MacBook Pro is now available, but its companion Envoy Pro external enclosure won't be available until later this year.

Long-time Mac accessory maker Other World Computing announced on Tuesday that it will begin shipping the first third-party SSD modules for Apple's Retina MacBook Pro starting on August 21. Pre-orders for its 480GB Aura Pro are being accepted starting today, and those who order by September 30 will receive a free Envoy Pro external enclosure when they become available "at the end of the year."
Apple released the 15" Retina MacBook Pro with SSD-only drive options in June, but its SSD modules use a proprietary connector and form factor. Until today, Apple was the only source for replacements or upgrades.
Making things particularly frustrating for early adopters, the base $2,199 model was originally only available with a 256GB SDD module. To get a Retina MacBook Pro with a 512GB or 768GB SSD module, customers were forced to order higher-end models. Apple has recently relaxed that restriction, letting users tweak the SSD capacity using expanded build-to-order options. Users that bought the original $2,199 entry-level model now have a potential upgrade path, too.
