UPDATED: Six-inch TomTom VIA 1605TM heading to US:
UPDATED: It’s official; news release below.
There were a few items showing up on the Web this morning about a six-inch START 60 that just hit the market in Europe, and while we often have to wait many months to see new TomToms on this side of the pond, a 6″ TomTom VIA 1605TM has shown up on Amazon.

Granted, we don’t have a release date yet, but I have hopes we’ll see this one in the next month or so. Note that while it isn’t showing up on TomTom.com, neither is the START 55 series, which has been available for over a month here in the states.
Magellan’s 7″ RoadMate line has certainly been popular, and I suspect TomTom sees a potential niche market here. What do you think? Is bigger better? PNDs and smartphones both seem to be gravitating that direction. Five inches just not enough screen real estate for you?

UPDATE: It’s now official; here’s the full news release…

CONCORD, Mass., May 09, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — TomTom announced today the launch of the TomTom VIA 1605 TM in the North America market featuring the largest screen ever offered on a TomTom portable navigation device. The sharp, 6″ screen with large buttons and menus help enhance the user’s driving experience.
“Safety on the road is an ever-present concern for today’s drivers,” says Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director Consumer at TomTom. “The unique design of the TomTom VIA 1605 TM addresses that concern, ensuring that the interaction is easy and instructions are in clear view.”
The TomTom VIA 1605 TM, which comes with lifetime traffic and map updates, also features the popular super-slim design and integrated fold-and-go EasyPort(R) mount offered with the TomTom VIA series. This innovative mounting system allows for easy positioning of the device either on the windshield or the dash and the device orients the display with a useful flip-screen feature.
The TomTom VIA 1605 TM will be available for purchase at retailers starting in late May for $229 USD or $219.95 CAD. TomTom is also releasing a six inch navigation device, the TomTom Start 60, throughout Europe.
